Triple/Quad screen question?

Ok, question for all you ladies who are pregnant or have been.

How many of you did the triple/quad screening at about 15-18 weeks of pregnancy? It tests for possible neural tube defects, chromosome abnormalities, Downs Syndrome...

I can't remember if I did this test with Miss J or not. If I did, I think things came back OK otherwise I think I would remember.

The thought I had was that if the tests came back positive for something, and we went on to do more diagnostic testing to further prove positive...would it really change anything? I mean, we would still choose to have the baby whatever the results. So is it really necessary to have the test and worry if the screening will come back OK...or if it comes back positive, is there really a defect or problem?

I am not sure.

So, I just wonder how many of you opted for the screening and how many of you didn't?

Thanks!!

Another update soon, I promise!!

I opted for it. But I agree with you, no matter what the results, we still would have had her. So maybe next time around we won't do it.

I did not have the test done. Anthony was real worried about it - but I knew that either way, I was still going to have her. I probably won't have any done with any of my pregnancies.

We haven't done it with either pregnancies. I just couldn't do it with the false positive/negative result statistics that are out there for the tests. Actually I don't even think my husband knew anything at all about the tests being available. :-)

The test does have a high false/positive result - I however took mine both times ... only for one thing ... JUST in case something was wrong I could start looking for resources and help in my home town. Good luck at whatever you pick - it will be the right choice!

We didn't have the test. I agree with you and the other comments. There are definitely false results that can have you worried sick over nothing at all. Plus...it won't change the fact that you're having this baby NO MATTER WHAT! :) Go with your gut.

I don't do any tests that aren't mandatory... I will have the baby no matter what, and worrying about a false positive or whatever would stress me out more than not having the test to begin with. I have to have the Beta Strep test next visit... but I think that's one you HAVE to have... The only other tests I had were the diabetes screen (28 weeks) and the usual blood tests they do.

I opted not to have the test for the same reasons you referenced. It didn't seem like it could tell for sure whether there was actually a problem or not, and I would have been worried sick if results came back that indicated there MAY be a problem. We were definitely not going to have an amnio either, due to even the slightest risk of miscarriage.

We chose not to have this test. We would have still wanted to have a baby with a disability if the test showed signs. The test would have just caused worry. With our second child, we were told at five months that there were other types of problems and there were enough worries for the next four months and we sure didn't want to add more.

I had the test because I wanted to have as much as much information as I could even though I never would have terminated the pregnancy.

Yes, a false positive would worry me unnecesarily. But, if my child would not survive birth, I'd want time to make arrangements so I (or my husband) wouldn't have to do it all while I was recovering from the delivery. Also, there are certain problems that could change the care I or the child would receive and I wanted to give the baby the best possible chances.

This is just me, though. I don't think there is any right or wrong answer. It depends on what you feel comfortable with.

This is a tricky situation that I have just been struggling with myself! We ended up deciding not to do the test. I had some really good advice from a friend of mine who did the test, which came back with an increased risk of downs. She said it was so stressful and she was really worried but she didn't want to do the amnio to find out for sure because there is a 50 % chance of miscarriage. She was too nervous that something would happen to the baby! Anyway I am just going wait and see and hope for the best!
