OK, got a question for y'all moms (hopefully I will get some responses today). I don't want this to spark a huge controversy, I just want to know your quick opinions or any links to sites that might help educate me a bit more. I am, of course, going to discuss further with my Pediatrician, but an stumped on which ones I should definitely get or which ones can wait until older.
Yes, the age old controversy of Vaccines. Miss J has her 1yr appt today, and is scheduled to have her routine shots. I am not against getting vaccines...I completely understand the reasons to get them, but here are my thoughts and questions.
HepB - I don't see/hear much controversy on this one. She has had all her routine ones up until now, so I don't' see a problem here.
DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertusuis) - I didn't think this one was a controversy, but recently saw a couple of articles saying this one also has an affect on the inflammation of the brain (possibly leading to signs of Autism). I did also read that the most important one here is Tetanus, since it is a non-inflammatory vaccine. But I don't know that I can separate the three of these into individual shots...or if I should even be concerned about this? Actually, this one might not be at 1year, might be 15-18 months.
Hib - again, not much controversy on this one, but should it/could it be pushed off?
PCV - Same as Hib?
IPV - This one, not much controversy, and I really don't see a reason not to. Actually, I read this is also one that is a non -inflammatory type vaccine and would not impact the brain leading to possible Autism.
Influenza (flu) - I don't think this is one I will ever consider. I don't get one yearly, never contracted the flu (minor flu symptoms). I guess I don't see a huge need.
MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) - Here it is...the big one...the one there is ALL the controversy over. And I did ask my Ped and she agreed that it could be put off and doesn't need to be administered at 1yr of age. My question...what is the age this can be put off to? 2yrs, 4yrs. Is this one worth separating them out and administering them individually? I know the mercury is not in these any more (that is what the main issue was in the past), but there is still questions whether this affects children at this age because their brains are developing so rapidly.
Varicella (Chicken Pox) - This one I am against just because it is Chicken Pox. Doesn't everyone get this at some point. Doesn't it make sense to get it so you don't get it when you are older? It is not a life threatening disease, just unpleasant. My only reason I would give this is because I have never had Chicken pox, and if DD were to get it, I could get it...and getting it as an adult is not so fun (so I hear). So, not sure if that is a good enough reason...or should I just get the shot that gives it to me so I don't have to worry about it? Hmmm?
HepA - don't know anything about this one...any thoughts?
So really, my questions are this:
1. Should I separate some of the combined vaccines?
2. Should I push out ones like the MMR, DTap until 2yrs or 4yrs?
3. Any articles that could give me additional info (but not confuse or scar me to death?)
4. Are there facts/information that I missed above with some of the "other" vaccinations?
Again, I am not against Vaccinations. But I am also not in favor of risking my child having developmental problems or even Autism if I can legally push out some of the vaccines to a later date so she is older and her brain is more developed. I also know that is not a guarantee, but if it would minimize the chances, I would like to think that option is available.
I have her appt at 3:30pm today...any thoughts by then would be much appreciated!!
Thanks girls!

I'm sorry this is late. I hope you went into her appointment in peace. I've never thought much of the shots. If the doctors think they are necessary, I trust them. I guess I've never really considered checking up on all the shots and the possible side effects. Anyway, I hope everything was fine. :o)
Mine is late, too. I'm actually one of "those moms" who don't always completely trust doctors, and went around with them about the vaccines. I would say, though, if you waited for some of them, as long as you could, that was a wise choice. We did ours all on schedule, and actually the last set that Shannon has to have before she starts school, they could have given her last week at her 4 year appointment, but the doctor said wait till next year, so that's what we're doing. Even the chicken pox one. They came out with a new booster this year, so Molly had another one and she is 7 and had already had the original booster 2 years ago... so she is extra covered now. I wouldn't worry about her contracting chicken pox, because most kids do get the vaccine, but we've never had any problems with any of them at all.
I know this is too late, but I hope the appointment went well anyway, and I'm sure you made the right choice.
Hi Libby,
Nice to meet you too - offically web-wise!!
I look forward to reading more.
Sorry, I am not a Mom so, no advice on the shots.
Lis :O)
